For over a century, the streets and parks of Philadelphia have echoed with the hoofbeats of urban Black cowboys — men and women who, beginning in the early 1900s, migrated to the city bringing their horsemanship traditions, established backyard stables in neighborhoods like Strawberry Mansion and Brewerytown, and taught youth that riding and caring for a horse builds discipline, community and pride.
One of the most enduring of those historic stables is the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club (FSURC), located on West Fletcher Street, North Philadelphia. Founded formally in 2004, but rooted in decades of Black equestrian culture, FSURC has sheltered horses rescued from stables, auction lots and stabilizes a legacy of riding and mentorship for urban youth.
Today, that heritage lives on through organizations such as the Philadelphia Urban Riding Academy (PURA), founded in 2019 to preserve and extend this tradition — offering riding lessons, after-school programs, and life-skills training in the midst of the city.
This shirt is more than a vintage-wash tee — with its slim fit and washed-out character — it nods to that spirit of resilience and community: the hidden threads of culture, craft and courage in urban Philadelphia. Wear it as a tribute to that legacy.
