The Presidential Election of 2000 was my first time voting — fresh out of high school, full of hope. The Florida recount gripped the nation, and when the results finally came in, my grandmother Lether Ann Stallworth turned to me with tears in her eyes.

She said, “Keep up the good work you just did — and never lose your voice.”

That moment has stayed with me ever since.
